About Us

BUXTED BONFIRE SOCIETY

Buxted Bonfire Society is proudly part of the Sussex bonfire tradition, a series of bonfire celebrations concentrated in Sussex from September to November each year. The celebrations mark both Guy Fawkes Night and the burning of 17 Protestant martyrs in Lewes's High Street from 1555 to 1557, during the reign of Mary Tudor. Whereas Guy Fawkes night in most parts of Great Britain is traditionally commemorated at large public fireworks displays or small family bonfires, towns in Sussex and Kent hold huge gala events with fires, processions, and festivals.

Our Story

Although Buxted Bonfire Society reformed as recently as 2017 after being closed for over four decades, we celebrate the history that is an important part of our cultural heritage; and we strive to keep this hundreds year old tradition alive and preserved for generations to come.

Buxted Bonfire Society helps bring local people together and build community spirit. Throughout the year events such as quizzes, craft fairs, tombolas, santa sleigh and more are held for villagers and the local community to take part and help raise money for local charities and volunteer organisations.

We have been working hard since reforming to bring bonfire back to Buxted. 2024 was a moment of history for the village; after over 40 years, Buxted Bonfire Society hosted the Sussex tradition of bonfire!

Bonfire Night

Empower
Growth

We will be taking to the streets of Buxted again this year, with yet another spectacular traditional torchlit procession, bonfire and fireworks while bringing together our local community and kindred bonfire societies. There will be a bucket collection to raise money for good causes in our local community.

We need your Support!

Bonfire is open to everyone; it is a great way to be a part of an age-old tradition, make new friends and can be enjoyed by the whole family. We do need more manpower to take on the various jobs required to hold the celebrations each year. Without the help we may be at risk of not being able to continue.
