
Road Closure Marshal
Event Date: Saturday 27th September 2025
Time Commitment: 6:00pm – 11:00pm (5 hours)
Pre-Event Briefing: 5:15pm (on the day)

Location: Buxted and surrounding road closure points

Age Limit: Minimum age 18 (due to health & safety responsibilities)
Expenses: This is an unpaid volunteer position. No expenses are covered, as none should be incurred in carrying out this role.
Role Overview:
Buxted Bonfire Society is seeking friendly, reliable volunteers to act as Road Closure Marshals at this year’s bonfire event. This role is essential for ensuring the safety of all attendees by helping manage road closures throughout the procession route.
It’s a one-night-only commitment and a great way to get involved in one of Buxted's biggest community events—whether you're volunteering solo or with a friend or family member.
What You'll Be Doing:

Attending a short pre-event briefing at 5:15pm on the day

Being stationed at a designated road closure point throughout the event

Setting up and monitoring barriers and signage (support will be provided)

Politely informing drivers and pedestrians about the closures and offering diversion information where needed

Ensuring only authorised vehicles enter the restricted area

Supporting the safe movement of the procession and the crowd

Assisting with barrier removal at the end of the event if required

Secretary
Number of Volunteers Required: 1
Position Type: Voluntary, Permanent
Time Commitment: A couple of hours a week, whenever suits you, with peak activity around meetings and event planning (especially in the lead-up to Bonfire Night). Some flexibility required for meetings and occasional in-person involvement.
Location: Remote with some in-person meetings in Buxted and the local area
Driving Licence Required: Preferred but not essential
IT Skills Required: Yes – confident use of email, word processing (e.g. MS Word or Google Docs), and basic spreadsheets
DBS Check: Not required
Age Limit: None – open to volunteers of any age

Role Overview:
The Secretary is a key member of the Buxted Bonfire Society Committee and is responsible for managing the administrative and communication duties that keep the Society running smoothly. This volunteer role is ideal for someone organised, reliable, and community-minded, looking to make a meaningful contribution to a historic local tradition.
Main Responsibilities:
Meeting Administration:

Schedule committee meetings and the Annual General Meeting (AGM), providing timely notice to members

Prepare and circulate agendas ahead of meetings

Take accurate minutes and distribute them promptly
-
Keep records of attendance and decisions made
Communication:

Act as the first point of contact for general enquiries and official correspondence
-
Forward queries to the appropriate committee member
-
Liaise with other bonfire societies, local councils, community groups, and charities
-
Send updates to members about upcoming events and Society news, via email or by hand when needed
Record Keeping:

Maintain up-to-date records of members and Society contacts
-
Organise and store official documents, policies, and licences
-
Assist with event documentation including insurance and risk assessments
Event Support:

Help coordinate permits and paperwork for public events
-
Ensure documentation is submitted to authorities on time
